[From the Edge of a Cliff] ISBN: 978-961-6789-20-2 CSK, Aleph, Ljubljana (in Slovene) Shortlisted (final selection) for the Veronika Award 1999 * Ad peripeteias of exile: After she executed a university purge (in 2010) that undercut my university position Mrs. Vesna Mikolič, at that time the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska in Koper, tried to sue my publisher (CSK, Aleph in Ljubljana) in order to have the poetry book Z roba klifa removed from circulation. That was done under the pretext that "the wrong and unproper words", such as "purge" - were used in it and that I "misrepresented events at the university in Koper". This political strategy to further degrade me can be ascribed to the general covering up of the facts after the brutal university purge in 2010. The event and its many orchestrated manoeuvres has had social effects that continue unhindered till today. Luckily for me and for my publisher (who actually did not back me up, but was angry at me!), Mikolič was not able to proceed with her attack "legally" as the new Rector (Dragan Marušič) of the university rapidly stopped her lynching and detraction spree with a decisive official order (pointing to the Dean's falsified authorisation of the ex-Rector) of the University of Primorska. Whilst the old Rector, M. Rado Bohinc (member of the Yugoslav political nomenclature and an ex-minister of the Interior, and as such by his function leader of the political police - udba) - created the prosperous frames for the university purge and backed it up with his vast extreme leftist (neostalinist) political and media network. In the hustle and bustle and social pressure of the last months before leaving for Paris, we accidentally had an uncorrected version of the translations printed (1st draft), which is why the book is virtually unusable. There was no time for a new print run. Thus, the publication is more a document of the times than a book of poetry. For later French publications, we naturally retranslated all the poems in peace in Paris.) |

* Ad peripeteias of exile: My translation of this book was stolen from me after the last correctures I made together with the swindling woman proofreader - A. J. O. After the last full point in the translation, the latter - over night and with the complicity of KUD Police Dubove editor - with whom I've already had terrible experience with my translation of Michelle Perrot (2015-2016), see above - became the official translator and recieved my royalties (!). If this is another name for a base thief, let it be. I should have known it better: after all, it was a rather typical stalinist-titoist intrigue (in fact, probably kardeljian after Edvard Kardelj, a famous Tito's right hand, theorist of self-managing socialism and a scheming master, otherwise educated in Moscow before Second World War and an agent of Comintern between 1936 and 1941), done, for example, to Serbian-Jewish writer Danilo Kiš (slightly different: he was accused of plagiat, but the social consequences of degradation are the same) and some other exiles in ex-Yugoslavia to punish and disqualify them internationally. All because they didn't want to collaborate in abject political complicity and omertà.
What are/were the stakes in such kind of spectacle?
Political toadies gain at least three jokers at the same time : first, degradation of the exile (so nobody would listen to what he/she has to say), second, looted symbolic capital is then avalable for the regime "disidents" or its protegé(e)s (who are otherwise uncapable of such work), and, third, in a world of inverted social and legal values the theft can be a handy tool for climbing the social ladder faster (as you enter the right complicity)! Acquirers (of other's people's work) - "properly" confirmed as the corrector, editor and a adjutant from the translators' association who (in my case) guaranteed that my translation is bad (!) - can then integrate the author's national or international network and further discredit the targeted victim. Sadly, the original author of a book - for whatever reasons (blindness, ambition, bad judging or else) - often plays with the officially confirmed.
I should have seen it coming ... but I haven't. I've surely learned a lesson in a hard way: an exile should immediately and absolutely cut off all the projects and relations with his/her ex-compatriots, no matter how good intentioned they may seem. After all, why should a person ultimately be available to (structural) homeland swindlers when there are so many honest and decent people in the world?

Ana Tominc, other translators too) * ISSN: 1854-0376 UP ZRS, Založba Annales, Koper (in Slovene) * Unaware that our faculty colleagues were preparing a purge that would take away our livelihood and ultimately lead to our exile, in 2010 Taja K. and Braco R. (together with guest editor Ana Tominc) prepared two extensive textbooks for our students of historical anthropology, which were intended to serve for the next decade.
Darko Darovec (one of the perpetrators of the purge) and his associates, as responsible for the publisher (ZRS Annales), should have paid for the printing of both issues, as we had received a subsidy. Payment was also guaranteed by Vlasta Vičič from the State Book Agency, where we received funding. It was a double lie; they did not pay the printing costs, and we printed both issues at our own expense. Today, we are satisfied; the matter has been handled fairly on our part and is now closed. The product is palpable and it shows what we were researching at the time and what topics we were exploring with students. |
2016: Michelle Perrot, Ženske ali molčanja zgodovine *
ISBN 978-961-93732-6-2 KUD Police Dubove (in Slovene) * Ad peripeteias of exile: Huge problems with proofreading this book. The publisher was not up to the task, so the main editor T. J. gave the book to three proofreaders, each of whom imposed their own solutions, sometimes all right, but many times totally incompetent (none of them were university staff, mostly narrow literary translators with very weak knowledge of terminology or epistemology). I had to fight, so to say, for every word written, as did Braco as the expert editor and a routine translatior of more than 10.000 pages. At that point, we said to ourselves: never again will we entrust a powerful book to a weak publisher (and a crooked person), even though I had another translation with this very publisher in the making in that time. It was annoying.
And what happened with the other book was exactly what we should have expected. The following year, perhaps in retaliation for the difficulties with this book, as we did not give in to the proofreaders' trivialization, the head of KUD PD appropriated my completely finished and edited literary translation by M. Salgado, A Little Dust in the Eyes. Of course, part of the blame lies with me, with us. When we decided to go into exile, Braco and I should have broken off all contact with our former compatriots – and not given the opportunists a chance to beat us up in their accommodation to the regime and turn this knavish trick into a career opportunity. |
